Characters are counted as you see them (an emoji or a letter with a combining mark is one), and bytes are the UTF-8 size (a Korean character = 3 bytes).

Words are split by spaces, so the word count may mean little for text written without spaces, such as Japanese or Chinese.

How to use

  1. Type or paste text into the text box.
  2. Characters with and without spaces, words, lines and UTF-8 bytes update as you type.
  3. [Copy results] copies all five counts as text, and [Clear] erases the text you entered.

Supported formats, limits and privacy

  • Characters are counted as you see them. An emoji (including skin-tone and family emoji) or a letter with a combining mark (such as é) counts as one character, and a line break counts as one character.
  • Characters without spaces excludes spaces, tabs, line breaks and full-width spaces.
  • Words are chunks separated by whitespace (spaces and line breaks). For languages written without spaces between words, such as Japanese and Chinese, this is not the real number of words, so do not rely on it.
  • Lines are the number of line breaks + 1, including empty lines. A Windows line break (CRLF) counts once.
  • UTF-8 bytes is the size of the text saved as UTF-8 (a Latin letter or digit = 1 byte, a Korean or Japanese character = 3 bytes, an emoji = 4 bytes or more). A line break counts as 1 byte. Counters that count a Korean character as 2 bytes (EUC-KR) give different numbers.
  • Up to 200,000 characters are counted at a time. Split longer text into parts.
  • Your text is counted only in this browser. It is not sent to a server or stored, and it disappears when you close the page.

Frequently asked questions

Which number should I use for an application with a length limit?

First check whether the limit is in characters with spaces, characters without spaces or bytes, and use that number. Sites may count line breaks and special characters slightly differently, so it is safer to leave some room than to hit the limit exactly.

Why are characters and bytes different?

Characters are the letters you see; bytes are the size the computer stores. In UTF-8 a Latin letter is 1 byte and a Korean character is 3 bytes, so a word of two Korean characters is 2 characters but 6 bytes.

How many characters is an emoji?

If it looks like one character on screen, it counts as one. Emoji with a skin tone and family emoji that combine several people are one character too. Their size in bytes varies and can be more than 4 bytes.
