How to use
- Paste text into the original A box and the text B box.
- Choose [Ignore case] or [Ignore spaces at line ends] if you need them.
- When you stop typing, the texts are compared and the counts of added, removed and changed lines appear with the result. Words that differ inside a changed line are shown in bold.
- [Copy result] copies the result as unified diff text (with three lines of context).
Example
If original A is "3 apples / 2 pears / 5 oranges" and text B is "3 apples / 4 pears / 5 oranges / 1 plum", the result is one changed line (2 pears → 4 pears, with the number highlighted) and one added line (1 plum). Use it to find edits between versions of a contract or manuscript, or changed lines in a settings file.
Supported formats, limits and privacy
- Input: up to 5,000 lines and 200,000 characters per box. Beyond that the texts are not compared and a message explains why. Compare long documents in parts.
- It finds the fewest line additions and removals (longest common subsequence). When removed lines are followed by added lines, they are paired from the top and counted as "changed".
- If identical lines are shuffled around so that more than 2,000 edits are needed, the comparison stops with a message so the page does not freeze.
- Word highlighting inside a changed line appears only when the two lines are fairly similar. The result shows changed lines with three lines of context and folds the other unchanged lines.
- Whether the last line ends with a line break, and the kind of line break (CRLF or LF), are not compared. Ignoring spaces applies only to the start and end of each line; spaces in the middle are still compared.
- What you enter is compared only inside this browser. It is not sent to a server or stored, and it disappears when you close the page.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a line marked "changed" when only a little changed?
The comparison works line by line, so a single different character makes the line a changed line. The words that actually differ inside it are shown in bold so you can see what changed.
Can I ignore indentation or letter case?
[Ignore spaces at line ends] treats lines that differ only in leading or trailing spaces and tabs as the same, and [Ignore case] does the same for upper and lower case letters. The result shows the text of original A as it is.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. The comparison runs entirely in this browser and nothing is sent or stored. The text disappears when you close the page.
